The French Market History
Café du Monde

The location of the original French Market and of New Orleans dates back to the Choctaw Indians, who used this natural Mississippi river levee location to trade to the river traffic. Early Europeans settlers used this location to sell products and produce, coming by boat. In 1718, New Orleans was established on this location of the Mississippi River by Jean Baptiste LeMoyne. This old New Orleans is called the French Quarter.

At one time or another, the French, Spanish and British governments all held influence over Louisiana. There are many buildings in the French Quarter that reflect their architectural styles. In 1771, the first French Market building was put up by the Spanish, known as “the Butcher’s Hall.” In 1812, this building was destroyed by a natural disaster. The following year it was replaced by the building which now houses the Café Du Monde. In the 1930’s French Market buildings were renovated to improve the French Market scene.
